Maximisation of energy efficiency


Recent times demand for improved technical requirements of buildings. Therefore, mechanical air-conditioning is almost not avoidable. Especially in large non-domestic buildings, the HVAC (humidification, ventilation, air-conditioning) can be very complex as is illustrated in Fig. 1 for a cooling system. Utmost care is necessary to start-up the systems, since a lot of interrelated parameters have to be defined. This set-up crucially determines the energy efficiency of the system. Unfavourable settings lead to a less efficient system. In practice, there occur often problems during start-up, e.g.,

  • proprietary modules for measurement, sensors, control prohibt free definition of energetically optimal algorithms (i.e., standardised solutions dominate the market, custom-made solutions are rare)
  • usually no full-load test possible, due to the weather conditions at start-up (design conditions cannot be reproduced)
  • time pressure -> low quality
  • usually just a start-up without appropriate adjustments; no energetic optimisation
  • missing start-up standards for HVAC systems

Contrary, data from the building information model (BIM) is available from the design process, but usually not employed later on. Although, these data allow the efficient utilisation of parameters which support the start-up engineer; provided applicable software is available. In addition, a large variety of sensors is distributed in modern buildings, which provide useful insight in the system behaviour. These sensors comprise temperature, pressure, flow rates, electrical and thermal powers, as well as switching states of throttles, flaps, switches, etc. These data can employed during the start-up process in order to adjust and optimise the system.
