The Technical Center offers practical development and testing facilities for innovative refrigeration, heating, and cryogenic technologies under realistic operating conditions. The state-of-the-art test facilities and test benches are ideally suited for the development and validation of cutting-edge energy technologies.

Test sites

Liquid Ice Test Site

The test facility investigates liquid ice (slush) as a refrigerant and high-density energy storage medium. Various measurement systems enable comprehensive development and analysis of refrigeration systems.

Thermal Refrigeration Technology Test Facility

The test facility is used to develop absorption refrigeration systems and thermal refrigeration systems with capacities up to 30 kW. It offers flexible test conditions for heat sources and heat sinks.

Testing Water as a Refrigerant (R718)

This test facility enables testing of water as a natural refrigerant and vacuum ice technologies with a cooling capacity of up to 1,000 kW, and integrates energy storage solutions.

Helium Infrastructure

A state-of-the-art infrastructure is available for testing systems designed for cryogenic applications using liquid helium. The test facility enables the compression, liquefaction, and recovery of helium, as well as extensive testing of components and measurement systems. An integrated gas purification system and re-liquefaction technology ensure the sustainable use of helium as a resource.

Test benches

ILK Dresden operates specialized test benches for measuring and optimizing heat exchangers for refrigeration systems and heat pumps. The tests analyze performance, pressure losses and thermal properties, supplemented by simulations and thermography.

Calibration test bench for temperature sensors

The calibration stand enables high-precision calibration of temperature sensors and thermocouples in the range from 3.5 K to 325 K. Precise temperature control is achieved through state-of-the-art measurement technology and a pulsed-jet cooler, supported by accurate readout electronics and multiplexer technology.

Refrigeration Performance Test Benches

The PLWP Test Center is accredited to determine the heating and cooling capacity as well as the acoustic properties of refrigeration systems. Among other things, heat pumps, compressors, fans, and heat exchangers are tested in accordance with current standards.

Fan Test Benches

Fan performance curves are determined in the airflow test rig in accordance with ISO 5801. Acoustic cameras are used to visualize noise sources in order to optimize acoustics.
