On June 10, a team of eleven runners from ILK Dresden took part in the charity run “Running Against Cancer” at the Ostra Sports Park in Dresden for the very first time. Although the afternoon started with a bit of rain, the atmosphere throughout the event was fantastic. It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm, motivation, and team spirit shown by all participants.

From €400 to €606 in Donations

Prior to the event, discussions with the management team had led us to expect a donation amount of around €400. Based on a donation commitment of €3 per lap per runner, this would have corresponded to approximately 12 laps per participant.

However, the motivation of our team exceeded all expectations. Nobody wanted to stop early, and together we completed an impressive 202 laps. As a result, the donation pledged by ILK Dresden increased to €606—more than one-third above the originally anticipated amount.

Strong Commitment to a Good Cause

The management team would like to warmly congratulate everyone involved on this outstanding achievement. As Professor Uwe Franzke commented:

“We are delighted that, thanks to the commitment of our employees, we are able to contribute a donation of €606 to support the projects of the Saxon Cancer Society (Sächsische Krebsgesellschaft e.V.). This result demonstrates what can be achieved when team spirit, sporting commitment, and the desire to support a good cause come together.”

A heartfelt thank you goes to everyone who participated, cheered from the sidelines, or supported the event in any way. Together, we demonstrated that physical activity, teamwork, and social responsibility are a powerful combination.

We are already looking forward to our next running event together!

The “Running Against Cancer” Event

The “Running Against Cancer” event consists of several different race formats. Participants run for up to one hour, or for as long as their individual fitness level allows. What matters is the number of laps—or meters—completed. Individual runners and teams can pledge a donation for each lap they complete, with all proceeds supporting the projects of the Saxon Cancer Society (Sächsische Krebsgesellschaft e.V.).

Alongside the races, participants and visitors can enjoy a diverse supporting program featuring entertainment, interactive activities, and educational opportunities. At the Health Marketplace, specialists answer questions about cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and aftercare, while also providing guidance on coping with the disease.

“Running Against Cancer” is organized with the support of dedicated volunteers and brought to life by charity teams, local clubs, and artists. Participants can take part by running, walking, jogging, or as part of a relay team—everything is possible. The sporting aspect is secondary; the focus is on solidarity and support for a good cause.

Since 2024, the event has been held under the patronage of Michael Kretschmer, Minister-President of the Free State of Saxony. In his message of support, he highlights the vital role of prevention in maintaining good health and emphasizes that the “Running Against Cancer” initiative provides a valuable opportunity for the community to support people affected by cancer. The Saxon Cancer Society (Sächsische Krebsgesellschaft e.V.) sincerely thanks him for once again assuming patronage of the Sunflower Runs (“Sonnenblumenläufe”).
