Task

As part of a research project, work is underway to develop an acoustics-based control system for air conditioning systems. The motivation for this stems from the fact that classrooms and seminar rooms in school buildings and educational facilities are characterized by high occupancy densities. To meet indoor air quality requirements, a high air exchange rate is necessary, which is achieved by using ventilation systems with heat recovery.

Ventilation systems are not standard in school buildings. In the case of renovations, decentralized systems could be retrofitted cost-effectively. However, decentralized systems very often lead to noise pollution.

The objective of the research project is to develop a control algorithm for regulating the fans or the air volume of HVAC systems, which is guided by the current acoustic situation in the classroom.

Areas of expertise

For this student project, specific tasks will be selected from the research project based on its current progress. The following topics are available:

  • Acoustic data collection during typical school lessons, data analysis and classification,
  • Acoustics – AI model development for machine-based data analysis, training, and development of control strategies,
  • Construction of a representative classroom in the lab, psychoacoustic investigations in the lab regarding the perception of noise,
  • Development of a digital twin for simulating classroom scenarios, simulation of classroom scenarios/data collection for training AI models

Notes

Since our internships and the supervision of student projects are primarily intended to provide practical experience and career guidance, we ask for your understanding that no compensation is provided. However, we would be happy to issue you a formal internship certificate and nominate your student project for the annual academic award presented by the Association for the Promotion of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology (Verein zur Förderung der Luft- und Kältetechnik e.V.).
