Task

Automatic density-dependent storage loading at different storage levels, as is used in thermal storage systems, is not possible in cold-water storage systems due to the small density differences between the cold-water supply and return. Therefore, an active charging and discharging system for cold water buffer storage tanks was developed at ILK Dresden, which enables active temperature-controlled stratification of the cold water at different storage heights and largely avoids convective mixing effects.

Areas of expertise

For this storage concept, a control system must be implemented and tested in the test rig. The control system, which also contains efficiency data for various chillers, is intended to handle the temperature-dependent control of the charging device. Typically, when a defined temperature is exceeded at the storage tank head, the chiller would be activated by a higher-level control system (GLT) and operated at rated capacity. By integrating the performance curve of the refrigeration unit used, the control system is intended to specifically request the refrigeration machine to operate at lower power levels. The higher efficiency at partial load (e.g., 50% of rated power) can thus be specifically utilized in multi-stage or speed-controlled compressors to save energy during refrigeration. The student’s thesis will focus primarily on practical experiments at the test bench. Various measurement series are planned in which the storage tank will be actively charged, and the quality of the temperature stratification will be measured and evaluated. The scope of the thesis in terms of content and time, as well as its specific focus, can be adapted
