Areas of application

Various sectors in industry, research, development, space and medicine that depend on noble gases (He-3, He-4, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe), oxygen, hydrogen, methane or nitrogen.

Objective

The purification of gases can be used for raw material extraction (e.g. helium from natural gas) and/or for recycling purposes (e.g. recovery of helium, re-processing of excimer laser gases) to generate cost benefits.

Both the liquefaction and the densification (i.e. to slush) of gases allows for an increased storage density for stationary and mobile applications.

Description

ILK Dresden offers a huge selection of possible procedures for the separation, enrichment, and purification of different gases (e.g. He-3, He-4, H2, Ne, O2, Ar, bio-LNG) that can be adapted, combined and optimised according to customer requirements. Among other things, this includes various processes based on swing adsorption (e.g. temperature swing (TSA), pressure swing (PSA), or a combination of both (PTSA)), processes based on membranes (including the usage of entropy filters for enriching helium-3), processes based on distillation and rectification, and other innovative processes (e.g. usage of vortex tubes, enrichment of oxygen based on magnets, and processes for the enrichment of ortho- or parahydrogen). Depending on the requirements of the customer, these processes can be directly combined with the liquefaction or the partial solidification (to so-called slush) of the fluids to increase the overall system efficiency by utilising synergies.

Moreover, ILK Dresden offers a huge selection of possibilities to liquefy various gases with low-boiling temperature (e.g. He, H2, Ne, O2, Ar, Bio-LNG) that can be adapted, combined and optimised according to customer requirements. This includes various process options with Joule–Thomson throttles, turbine expanders, cryocoolers, ejectors, vortex tubes, different types of heat exchangers, and additional elements that can be specified by the customer. For example, the latter may include a cryogenic storage tank, a cryogenic pump for the storage tank (which can also be a fully submergible pump, if the in-house development of ILK Dresden is used), or additional modules to reduce boil-off gas.

As a feature, ILK Dresden also offers the customised development of systems for the partial solidification of gases with low boiling temperature (e.g. H2, O2, N2, CH4) to slush. Possible solutions for this may involve the auger method, the freeze–thaw method, various spray-like methods, and in-house solutions. Notwithstanding the above, by utilising the in-house-developed cryogenic pumps of ILK Dresden, it is possible to deliver the slush at atmospheric or even higher pressures.

In general, the range of services from ILK Dresden can be customised and includes, independent from the topic, conduct of design studies, analyses of systems and processes, identification of optimisation potentials, conduct of development works (including 3-D design and 3-D simulations), manufacturing and test of prototypes, and the manufacturing of small series. Connections to existing systems at the customer side as well as special requirements regarding measurement and control technology will always be considered.
