The phase change from water to ice and vice versa occurs at a constant temperature of 0 °C. This melting temperature of pure water is used as one of two fixed points on the Celsius temperature scale.
Ice has a very high energy density (latent heat) and is therefore an excellent cold storage medium that has been used for centuries. In the course of the energy transition, energy storage is also becoming increasingly important in air conditioning and refrigeration technology. As a cost-effective and environmentally friendly storage medium, ice therefore plays an important role in many of the development projects at ILK Dresden. Some examples are:
