The Insitute of Air Handling and Refrigeration (ILK) provides comfort for people and art – Opening of the Humboldt Forum

ZUSE institutes save cultural heritage

How researchers protect cultural heritage

With the opening of the Humboldt Forum in the reconstructed Berlin Palace, access will be open to a spectacular building for art and culture. To make sure that neither visitors nor art treasures will start to sweat or freeze, the Institute for Air Handling and Refrigeration (ILK Dresden) has been simulating the air movement in the Berlin Palace since 2010.

The event centre of the forum alone, the Agora, is provided with approximately 50.000 cubic meters of incoming air by the air-conditioning unit. And this is necessary, considering the amount of fresh air that one person needs (about 30 cubic metres per hour) as well as their loss of liquid.

Whether it is summer or winter, whether you are standing under the mighty cupola, on the stairs or by the windows, the experts from the Institute of Air Handling and Refrigeration (ILK) know how the air should go into the Berlin Palace without turning into wind. Thus, the space created in the Berlin Palace can become a place for art.
